Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit emphasized the vital role of Arab archives in preserving the region’s collective memory and identity during his address marking Arab Document Day at the League’s headquarters in Cairo.
Aboul Gheit praised the initiative launched by ALECSO to celebrate Arab documents as a cornerstone of national identity and cultural heritage, describing archivists and document specialists as “guardians of the Arab world’s memory.”
He warned against growing threats to Arab archives, including attempts to distort historical records and erase cultural narratives.
The Secretary-General congratulated Dr. Abdullah Majed Al Ali of the UAE on his election as President of the Arab Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives, and Dr. Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Buainain of Qatar for chairing UNESCO’s Memory of the World Committee for the Arab Region.
