Seven people were killed during an armed attack on a mosque in the village of Saiya Saiya, located in the Kaduna state of northwestern Nigeria.

According to a local source, 5 of the victims were killed inside the mosque, while 2 others were killed at separate locations within the village.

The attack occurred around 8:00 PM yesterday, Friday, as villagers were performing their evening prayers in a local mosque.

The source further revealed that two additional villagers sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

Malam Abdul Rahman Yusuf, the village leader, confirmed the occurrence of the incident.

He stated that the chief of the security detail was among the victims who were fatally attacked within the mosque.

During a press statement, he expressed, "We suspect that they tracked the chief of security to the mosque to target him. We were praying inside the mosque when they arrived and began firing."

"Five people were killed inside the mosque, along with a driver who was transporting food supplies to the village. Another person from a neighbouring village also lost their life."

Yusuf mentioned that security forces, including soldiers and police officers from the nearby towns of Ikara and Baljor, arrived at the scene around 12:30 AM.

He added that the assailants had left the village before the security personnel reached the location.
