A terrorist attack in eastern Raqqa, Syria, has left six people dead, including four Syrian Army personnel.
The assault targeted a military post along the Shweihan road, southwest of the town of Shannan, according to a report by Sputnik.
The attackers, whose identities remain unknown, opened fire on the Syrian Army checkpoint in the early hours of the morning, also striking two civilian vehicles that were passing through.
The attack claimed the lives of three Syrian officers—one ranked captain and two first lieutenants—and one soldier, as well as two local civilians from the nearby town of Ma’adan. Three other civilians and two additional soldiers sustained injuries in the assault.
This incident follows an increase in targeted attacks on Syrian Army patrols in southern Syria’s Daraa Province.
On October 19, armed groups attacked a Syrian Army patrol in Daraa, following another ambush the night before.
In one case, militants detonated an explosive device along a road used by a joint army and security patrol between the towns of Eastern Karak and Eastern Ghariyah in northeastern Daraa.
In related developments, the US military announced airstrikes that reportedly killed up to 35 ISIS members in Syria earlier this week.
US Central Command confirmed on social media that the strikes targeted several ISIS locations in the Syrian desert, focusing on high-ranking ISIS leaders.
According to Central Command, there were no civilian casualties reported from the October 28 strikes, which aim to weaken ISIS’s operational capabilities, disrupt their planning, and hinder potential attacks against civilians, US allies, and partners in the region and beyond.
