At least six people were killed and dozens injured after an explosion struck a mosque in the central Syrian city of Homs during Friday prayers, according to Syrian media and monitoring groups.

Syrian state outlets reported that the blast occurred inside a mosque located in a neighbourhood largely inhabited by members of the Alawite community. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the explosion left six people dead and at least 20 others wounded.

State television channel Al-Ikhbariya said the explosion was caused by explosive devices planted in a crowded area of the mosque while worshippers were attending Friday prayers. Security forces cordoned off the site as investigations got underway to determine the exact circumstances of the blast.

Local officials told Reuters that the incident may have involved a suicide bomber or explosives placed inside the mosque, although no official conclusion has yet been announced.

The attack highlights ongoing security challenges in parts of Syria, despite a relative decline in large-scale fighting in recent years. Authorities said investigations are continuing to identify those responsible and clarify the motive behind the attack.
