Six Amazon workers were confirmed dead Saturday after a series of tornadoes swept through a warehouse near St. Louis, ripping off its roof and causing concrete walls, 11 inches thick longer than football fields, to collapse.
At least 45 Amazon employees have managed to safely get out of the rubble of the 500,000-square-foot Edwardsville, Illinois facility, One Fire Chief said.
Authorities gave up hope of finding more survivors as they shifted from rescue efforts to recovery efforts that were expected to last for days.
Jeff Bezos said Saturday night that he was "sad" that at least six Amazon employees died at a warehouse in Illinois that was hit by a hurricane on Friday.
Bezos came under fire on social media earlier Saturday for failing to mention the fatal accident in Edwardsville while cheering the latest group of space tourists in an Instagram post.
