On Tuesday, 45 Cairo International Film Festival screened "Our Lovely Pig Slaughter" during the events of the Official Selection out of the competition.
It is the Middle East premiere of the film.
The events of the film discuss the traditional annual pig slaughter event that happens every year at the old folks’ place in Osoblaha.
It’s the only day of the year when the whole family gathers to celebrate, complain, eat, and drink.
So, the film takes the audience into a vivid scene of children playing with the Pig and participating in preparing the meat for making sausages.
Despite this rejoiceful mood, the film dives deeper into some negativity and suffering of family members.
Grandpa told his son-in-law Karel that this would be the last slaughter. In addition, Karel’s daughter Romana misses her mother, therefore she feels despair. She can't celebrate the events, however, she participates in making the food.
Her sister Lucie’s marriage is falling apart, and she loses her emotional connection with his husband. Lucie’s son Dušan is lost in the clashes of the female and male worlds.
The film depends on gloomy colors for the woods, ashes, and celebrations which concentrate on the ugly side of these gatherings, and refute the cheerful stereotypes of family gatherings.
