A hospital attack in southwest China resulted in the death of two individuals and the injury of 21 others on Tuesday, according to the official Chinese news agency Xinhua, without specifying the nature of the attack.

The agency stated, "The incident occurred at a local hospital at 13:20... with more than ten casualties reported, including fatalities and injuries."

The attack took place in Chengxiang County in the northeast of Yunnan Province in southwestern China, with authorities investigating the incident.

Images released by the state-run news site, The Paper, showed a man wielding a knife towards another individual while holding a stick in the hospital lobby, with police officers arriving at the scene.

A local resident told the site, "It happened around 11 a.m... the situation is still somewhat chaotic."

Mass crimes are rare in China, where citizens are prohibited from owning firearms, but in recent years, there has been a wave of stabbing incidents.

In August last year, two people were killed and seven others injured in Yunnan Province after a mentally ill man attacked individuals with a knife.

The month before, six people were killed and another injured in a stabbing incident at a kindergarten in Guangdong Province in southern China.

In August 2022, three individuals were killed and six others injured in a knife attack at a kindergarten in Jiangxi Province in southeast China.
