Torrential monsoon rains have triggered massive flooding in Queensland, Australia, leading to the deaths of two people and forcing hundreds to flee their homes.
The relentless downpours, which lasted for a week, dumped months' worth of rainfall in just a few days, causing widespread destruction in small rural towns along the state’s northern coast.
On Tuesday, authorities discovered the body of an 82-year-old woman in a field near the town of Ingham in North Queensland.
This followed the death of a 63-year-old woman on Sunday when a rescue boat she was in collided with a tree and capsized.
The extreme weather event has displaced hundreds of residents, led to the collapse of a critical bridge, and disrupted drinking water supplies in the hardest-hit areas.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli acknowledged that the northern coast is no stranger to tropical storms but described the scale of devastation as "truly astonishing."
