At least 14 people were injured in a violent attack involving a knife and an unknown liquid at a factory in central Japan on Friday, according to emergency services and local media reports.
The incident occurred at an industrial facility in the city of Mishima, in the Shizuoka region. Tomoharu Sugiyama, head of civil defense in Mishima, told Agence France-Presse that 14 people required treatment from emergency responders.
Emergency services received a call at around 4:30 pm local time reporting that five or six people had been stabbed at a nearby rubber factory and that an unidentified liquid spray had also been used during the attack.
Japanese media reported that one suspect was detained at the scene, with some outlets saying the attacker was arrested inside the factory and remains in custody.
A separate report by the Associated Press, citing Kyodo News, said that at least eight of the injured were taken to the hospital.
The condition of the victims has not yet been disclosed, and authorities have not released further details about the suspect or the motive behind the attack. Investigations are ongoing as police work to determine the nature of the liquid involved and the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The attack has raised fresh concerns about workplace safety in Japan, a country where such violent incidents remain relatively rare.
