At least 12 fighters loyal to Iran were killed in a series of airstrikes in eastern Syria late Saturday night, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The strikes, carried out by unidentified aircraft, targeted military sites in the Deir ez-Zor region and the town of Al-Bukamal, near the Iraqi border.

The observatory reported that the five airstrikes also caused numerous injuries and specifically hit locations near Deir ez-Zor airport.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but the region is often subject to Israeli and occasional US air raids due to the heavy presence of Iranian-backed militias.

The Deir ez-Zor region has been a frequent target for Israeli military operations, as Israel has vowed to prevent Iran from establishing a permanent foothold in Syria.

The US has also conducted airstrikes in eastern Syria, targeting the same militias that maintain close ties with Tehran.

Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes aimed at weakening Iran-aligned forces operating in Syria, including Hezbollah and other militia groups.

While Israel rarely comments on specific attacks, it has repeatedly stated its commitment to stopping Iranian entrenchment in the region.
