In Sudan's northern River Nile State, 10 civilians lost their lives in a landmine explosion that occurred on a bus they were traveling in, according to a medical official on Sunday.
The official, who chose to remain anonymous, informed the French Press Agency, "10 civilians were killed in a landmine explosion on a bus traveling from the eastern Jazeera region to Shendi city in the River Nile State," which is approximately 150 kilometers north of the capital Khartoum.
This incident marks the first of its kind since clashes erupted in the country between the Sudanese army under the leadership of Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo on April 15, 2023.
Last week, social media users circulated a warning attributed to the Sudanese army for the residents of Shendi.
It stated, "Temporary barricades have been set up with highly sensitive landmines, equipped with long-range explosives. Everyone is urged to exercise caution and avoid these areas."
However, no official statement has been released by the army regarding this matter.
Last week, the conflict reached the island of Meroë, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, located in Sudan's River Nile State in the north.
