At least 10 people, including a train driver and eight security officers, have been killed after militants hijacked a passenger train in Pakistan, according to local reports.

The attack triggered a large-scale counter-terrorism operation, with 37 individuals hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the assault.

The Balochistan Liberation Army, an extremist group, claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place on a train traveling from Quetta to Peshawar.

The militants reportedly detonated explosives on the railway tracks before opening fire on passengers and security personnel.

Pakistani security forces have been engaged in a high-intensity operation to eliminate the militants and free the hostages.

Authorities have confirmed the release of at least 155 of the 450 passengers onboard at the time of the attack. Nearly 30 militants have been killed, though the exact number of assailants remains uncertain.

Reports indicate that the militants were heavily armed and in possession of explosives, further complicating rescue efforts.

The operation to secure the train and neutralize the threat remains ongoing. Russian diplomatic officials in Karachi have stated that there is no information indicating Russian citizens were among the hostages.
