A police officer was injured in a knife attack in the southern French city of Marseilles, news agencies cited La Provence on Saturday.

The police shot the attacker dead immediately, as the attack took place before the headquarter of the Marseille administration.

Authorities added that the attacker broke down the place and attacked a police officer; therefore, he was shot by the security."

Moreover, security forces, investigation teams, and ambulances were deployed to the scene, besides warning the citizens for being around the site of the accident.

Until now, the motives behind the accident have not been identified by the investigation.

The city has experienced several violent acts recently, including shootings and knife attacks.

Last year, four persons were killed in two separate shootings that took place in Marseille, France, local media agencies reported.

The first accident occurred Tuesday night as Porte d’Aix Police received reports of a shooting near Sain-Charles train station. Two men were found dead at the scene. Later on, authorities found a wounded 20-year-old woman shot in her throat; she died shortly after officers reached her.

Moreover, another 31-year-old man was found with serious back gun wounds, and he was transported to the hospital.

Authorities couldn’t identify the criminals behind the accident or the motives behind the shooting.

Regarding the other shooting, it took place in Raynaud city, which is one of Marseille’s northern districts, at 2 am, according to authorities.

A 25-year-old-man was found shot dead; in addition, another 21-year-old-man was also found at the scene in a serious trauma case although he wasn’t injured.

The motives behind the accident are still unclear, but authorities believe that it could be related to the drug trade that is exposed in the city.
