CAIRO, Jan. 20 (SEE) - Sometimes we exaggerate in describing an incidence to the extent that might show it as an extraordinary heroism, while it is not so!

But in an incidence of life or death, where all surrounding conditions help to save an innocent soul.. Then this is really heroic, without any exaggeration.

“The Train Doctor”.. an incident which featured all the meanings of what we hear as ‘Medicine is the life’s soul” and “Doctors are mercy angels”.

I spoke to Dr. Wessam Ramzy.. perhaps to get inspired by her story when she requested to stop a train in order to save the life of a 1.5 -year-old toddler.

She could have thought to give in to the condition that the train was running. However, she refused to give in for those thoughts, and instead, she followed her merciful feelings until she asked to stop the train.

Specialized in heart and intensive care at Ras Al Teen General Hospital, Dr. Ramzy, 42, born in Assuit, married with children and lives in Smooha, Alexandria.

The train is her means to keep her small family in contact with her home village in upper Egypt. The other day, her trip was not a usual one. While she was on board the train, she heard frightened calls in the train carriage, the same she used to hear when there is an emergency in or critical situation at hospitals. “Is there any doctor here on board?”.. “Yes I’m a doctor,” she immediately replied.

She saw a frightened mother carrying a baby who is suffering severe convulsions during his sleep. As the severe convulsions were easing, the child was still fainting while his body completely turned into blue.

Immediately, Dr. Ramzy intervened and began to assist his breathing by ‘mouth-to-mouth resuscitation’. Though he stayed fainting, the baby cried, announcing his return to life.

Dr. Ramzy did not have any medical tools to measure the temperature of the child or to follow his breath. The place was full of silence and anxiety and every minute represented a risk to his life.

The parents were terrified and their eyes were full of tears for their sole baby, who they were gifted after four years. Dr. Ramzy was not less worried. She, immediately, got an idea outside the box and decided to stop the train!

She asked the train’s officer to stop it at the nearest station.. She knows very well that stopping the train is not something easy.. He refused and said it was impossible! She didn’t lose hope and stayed with the officer trying to persuade him. She told him that he would be responsible for the baby's life.

She told him to stop at the nearest station, Benha station, for not more than two minutes, while the baby step out of the train.

Talks were then held between the officer, driver and head of the station until they accepted. Hope revisited hearts once again.. And she called a hospital to send an ambulance to the station.

Arriving at the station, there was a waiting ambulance and a police car.

An episode of human efforts were there inside the train. The train’s officer, driver and hostess were all participating with Dr. Wessam to find a solution.

It was a significant moment when the train stopped. She led it wisely..

She advised the father accompany the baby to the hospital, while the mother continue her way to Alexandria with lots of packages the family had.

The time was after midnight, she stayed with her, assured her that the baby will be okay with his dad in the hospital and that she should not feel worried.

They stayed in contact via phone with the father to get to know the development of the baby’s case.

As she expected, his condition was caused by a high temperature, latent in his body, un-noticed through touching, which reached 40 degree. That was the reason why the baby fainted and why it was so important to get him to the nearest hospital so as to avoid any negative consequences, which might hurt the brain.

The extreme heat, for her, is easy to cure, but this does not mean it is not fatal!

The condition of the baby stabilized in the hospital and the train stopped at its last stop in Alexandria, returning back the mother and the doctor who stayed with her until she was completely assured.

The words of gratitude, the mother told the doctor, were not enough, given the way she applied all the meaning of humanity. The mother promised to tell her baby when he grows up that he owes the doctor his life. “I will tell him the story of the doctor who saved his life and stopped the train for him."
