DC Studios co-leader James Gunn announced on Twitter that pre-production on “Superman: Legacy” has begun. The 2025 comic book tentpole will be the official launch of the new DC Universe as supervised by Gunn and his DC Studios co-head Peter Safran.

“I’m honored to be a part of the legacy and what better day than Superman Anniversary Day to dive fully into early pre-production on ‘Superman: Legacy’? Costumes, production design, and more now up and running,” Gunn wrote alongside a photo of the “Superman: Legacy” script cover page.

Gunn is writing and directing the next Man of Steel movie and has been keeping fans updated on the latest development.

The film was confirmed in January when Gunn and Safran revealed the first slate of film and television titles for their new DC Universe, which includes films such as “Supergirl: World of Tomorrow” and “The Brave and the Bold” (a Batman and Robin movie).

“Superman: Legacy” is rated PG-13 and will not be another origin story, even if it deals with the hero’s double identity as an alien and Earth’s protector.

The movie depicts Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Since Gunn is rebooting Superman for the big screen with a younger Man of Steel, it means previous Superman actor Henry Cavill will no longer be playing the iconic superhero.

Cavill took up the red cape for Zack Snyder’s "Man of Steel" in 2013 and helped to build the DCEU universe as it is today. He reprised the role in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League”.

The actor who will play the iconic superhero has yet to be announced, nonetheless, Superman Legacy is set to fly into theaters on July 11, 2025.
