CAIRO, Nov.6 (SEE)- Ozone layer is slowly recovering from damage caused by aerosol sprays and coolants. The gaping Antarctic ozone hole should disappear in the 2060s, a United Nations study reported.

The Earth’s protective layer had been thinning since the late 1970s and scientists raised the alarm before ozone depleting chemicals were phased out worldwide.

As the ozone layer began to thin more lifeforms including humans were exposed to stronger solar rays which increase the likelihood of cancer.

Some scientists reported that the severe bans on the manufacture of these gases has seen the hole in the ozone and recover at a rate of one to three per cent per decade.

The ozone layer works as sunscreen، shielding the planet from potentially harmful ultraviolet radiation that can cause skin cancer, cataracts suppress, immune systems and damage plants.

The study was a four year review of the ''Montreal Protocol'', a 1987 ban on man-made gases that damage the fragile high-altitude ozone layer.

Paul Newman, chief Earth scientist at Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Center said: ''If ozone depleting substances continued to increase we would have seen huge effects. We stopped that.''
