Irrigation min.: We have to cooperate to achieve water sustainability in Africa

CAIRO, Aug 29 (SEE) - Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Mohamed Abdel Ati stressed on Tuesday the importance of collective action among the African countries for achieving sustainable development, providing clean drinking water and ensuring safe sanitation.

Abdel Ati's remarks came during his presidency of a session on effects of sanitation in Africa on the sidelines of World Water Week, held in Stockholm in Sweden.

He pointed out that the  African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) is a platform for the African states for enhancing its capabilities in order to achieve progress in the fields of drinking water and sanitation in line with the Africa Water Vision for 2025 and Africa Agenda for 2063.

The minister asserted the importance of holding dialogues on Africa's ability to analyze and discuss the climate changes and other emerging challenges as well as water management issue given that the absence of an adequate mechanism to mobilize existing capacities in the continent at the current stage.

During the session, he reiterated the necessity of searching for mechanisms aiming to provide financial support to think tanks and water organizations.

In press statements after the session, Abdel Ati said that some of topics and activities related to the African council were discussed in addition to developing the council's strategy for the next ten years.

The minister highlighted the importance of the international community's role in supporting the African countries to face the sequences of the climate change phenomenon whether by funding of direct investment in order to ease its effects.

The World Water Week provides a unique forum for the exchange of views, experiences, and practices between the scientific, business, policy and civic communities. It focuses on new thinking and positive action toward water-related challenges and their impact on the world’s environment, health, climate, economic and poverty reduction.
