CAIRO, July 12 (SEE) - In a harsh diplomatic move to Israel, the Irish Senate voted for a legislation banning importing and trading of goods, produced from the Israeli-occupied Palestinian lands, opening the way for making Ireland the first EU nation to enforce a boycott.

The Control of Economic Activities (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018 of Ireland, which bans imports from illegal Israeli settlements that are built on Palestinian territories, passed with 25 "yes" votes, 20 "no" votes and 14 abstentions.

After being approved in the upper house of the Irish parliament, the legislation will now need to get through more votes from the upper house and then the lower house before becoming law, according to the Guardian.

The legislation was slammed by Israel and hailed by Palestinian officials and Arab Israeli Knesset members.

Israel dominated the West Bank from Jordan in 1967 and around 600,000 settlers live in occupied territory in east Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Golan Heights.
