Teenage Indian chess prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju, became the youngest player to win the men’s Candidates Tournament in Toronto, on 21st April 2024. With this, the 17 year old Grandmaster has set up an opportunity for himself to dethrone the reigning World Champion Ding Liren of China.

Ding Laren was crowned the Champion in 2023 World Chess Championship when the five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen decided not to defend his title at the time.

Previously, the youngest ever winner in a Candidates Tournament was Russian legend Garry Kasparov when he won the title in 1984 at an age of 20. Applauding the success of Gukesh, Kasparov wrote on social media platform X, “The Indian earthquake in Toronto is the culmination of the shifting tectonic plates in the chess world.”

Gukesh will take on Ding Laren in 2024 World Chess Championship, expected to be held later this year. Should he succeed, Gukesh will once again beat Kasparov’s record and become the youngest World Champion ever.
