Diego Elias Revives Peru’s Glory in Squash

TORONTO, MAR.10 (SEE) - The Peruvian squash champion Diego Elias defeated New Zealand’s Paul Coll, world number 7, by a score of 3-2, at the Troilus Canada Cup’s final that took place in Toronto, Canada.

The 22-year-old Peruvian player took the first game 11-8 of the 98-minute marathon match. His rival revenged winning the second game 11-6. The Peruvian came back with a vengeance and took the third 11-8.

Coll turned the tables and took the fourth 8-11; however, Elias managed to claim the tournament’s title winning the fifth and decisive game 11-6.

In a 31-minute semifinal, he beat Egypt’s Marwan El-Shorbagy, world ranked 10, by 3-0 (11-7/11-4/11-4).

Regarding Elias’ previous victories, he won the boys’ under-15 (BU15), BU17, and the BU19 competitions at the US Junior Open in 2010, 2012, and 2013, respectively.

In 2014, he was the hero of the WSF Men’s World Junior Squash Championship that was held in Windhoek, Namibia. Elias claimed the tournament’s title after he won the final over Egypt’s Omar El Atmas 3-0 (11-3/11-2/11-1).

He retained the title for the following year when he overcame Egypt’s Youssef Soliman, by 3-0 (11-6/11-9/11-8), at the 2015’s final celebrated in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

In 2013, Elias won the boys’ under-17 (BU17) games at the British Junior Open. Two years later, he was the BU19 competitions’ champion.
