One of the global food companies operating in Egypt revealed its plan for setting up a large project to maintain Egyptian honey bees breed by building 1,000 wooden beehives.

The company's regional manager Mahmoud Bazan said: "Egyptian honey bees breed is rare and in danger of extinction," adding that the bees have great capability to adapt to the Egyptian environment and produce high-quality honey.

"The Egyptian bees face extinction because they are being brought up in muddy hives but German experts succeeded in increasing their numbers through bringing up bees in wooden hives," Bazan was quoted as saying by Al-Ahram Newspaper.

He mentioned that implementing this new experiment contributed to boosting the hives' numbers from 300 to 500, saying: "There are plans for reaching 1,000 hives by the end of this year."

"The company had conducted several studies about investing in beehives which proved the projects' success in the long term by producing the best kinds of honey," he underscored, expressing the company's trust in the Egyptian market.

He further pointed to the decline in the number of bees worldwide; Europe, the United States, and the Middle East region.

It is worth-mentioning that the Egyptian breed existed 5,000 years ago.
