There are an estimated 370 million indigenous people in the world, living across 90 countries. They live in all geographic regions and represent 5000 different cultures. Indigenous people speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s 7000 languages.

These languages are extensive and complex systems of knowledge that are central to their identity, their cultures, worldviews and expressions of self-determination.

The indigenous languages are necessary for the enjoyment of human rights, as well as being a part of the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of indigenous peoples.

According to UNESCO’s Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger, 230 languages went extinct between 1950 and 2010. Today, a third of the world’s languages have fewer than 1,000 speakers left.

Noteworthy, on 9th August was chosen because on that day in 1982, the UN hosted the first meeting of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations setting in train the long and difficult task of drafting the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

It took 25 years to bring to fruition and was finally ratified by the General Assembly in 2007 to be added to the treasury of the world's key human rights documents. It was ratified by Australia in April 2009.

A number of important rights are considered to be essential to the achievement of that end including the rights to self-determination and to traditional lands, territory and resources. There is as well the right to autonomy or self-government in matters relating to internal or local affairs and to provide education of children in their own language.

Treaties with national governments are also given considerable attention, both the negotiation of new ones and the honouring of historic agreements.
