A World Food Programme study revealed that more than a quarter of Gaza's population faces catastrophic hunger and famine.

Washington Post reported - on its website today - that based on data from the United Nations (UN) and other sources, the study indicates that approximately 576,600 people have completely run out of food, and the population in general faces severe food insecurity.

World Food Programme spokesman Steve Travilla said that the number of people facing catastrophic levels of hunger in Gaza is four times greater than the total number of people facing “catastrophic” levels of hunger around the world.

Travilla added, "The scale and speed of this crisis are unprecedented in modern times. If current projections continue, we will reach famine by next February."

The U.S. newspaper pointed out that before last October 7, two-thirds of the population of Gaza relied on food aid provided by the World Food Programme to meet their daily food needs, and now, limited access to aid and widespread restrictions are imposed on the movement of WFP staff from assisting the country.
