Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), revealed that Egypt will host the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP27.

He added that countries work to assess progress towards the agreed goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 Celsius degrees above pre-existing levels.

He stressed that

achieving this goal will have great benefits for human health, as failure to achieve this comes with grave risks.

Climate change will already affect health in several ways, through increased frequency of weather events, more disease outbreaks, and more mental health problems, Gebresus said.

He warned that climate change will lead to outbreaks of cholera and dengue fever worldwide, and climate change increases the risks of the emergence of new pathogens with the possibility of more epidemics.

He linked climate change to exacerbating disease and malnutrition, which has a multiplier effect, as patients are more vulnerable to malnutrition, and people who suffer from malnutrition are more likely to get sick and die, explaining that the climate crisis is a health crisis.
