Dr. Hanan Hassan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, said in a statement, "This morning we heard alarming reports of waves of airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, with reports indicating hundreds of deaths."
She added, "I reiterate the appeal made by the Humanitarian Coordinator for an end to hostilities, the continuation of humanitarian assistance, the release of hostages, and the restoration of basic services and livelihoods for people. This is the only way forward."
She said, "While we are being asked to do more with less, the organization faces a growing threat, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. In Sudan, 20 million people need urgent health assistance, and some 25 million people will be severely food insecure by June of this year. Yet, the health cluster response is only 5.6% funded."
