DC United announced on Wednesday the appointment of Swiss coach Rene Weiler, the former Al-Ahly coach, to coach the team for the upcoming period.
The American club's statement said: "DC United has agreed to appoint world-class Swiss coach Rene Weiler as head coach of the club, pending his obtaining a US work permit. Kevin Flanagan will continue as interim head coach until Weiler arrives."
"DC United is a club with a rich history and a passionate fan base. The foundations in place here give me confidence in what we can build," Weiler said. "There is still a lot of work ahead of us, but I am fully committed to leading this club to where it belongs, competing at the highest level in Major League Soccer."
With over 24 years of coaching experience and six major titles to his name, Weiler is the most experienced and accomplished coach in DC United's history and joins MLS as one of the league's most decorated coaches.
