Ambassador of France, Stéphane Romatet, Ambassador of Germany, Cyrill Nunn, and Head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt, Christian Berger inaugurated Wednesday Old Mahalla Water Treatment Plant, near Tanta city.
Representatives from Egyptian authorities attended the event, namely the Governor of Gharbia and Chairman of the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, according to a tripartite statement issued by the EU and Embassies of France and Germany in Cairo.
The project includes upgrading and increasing the capacity of the existing water treatment plant in Mahalla by 40,000 m³/daily. The Mahalla's project, which is implemented in the framework of the Improved Water and Sanitation Program (IWSP1), enables the residents of this area, 345,600 people, to have access to high-quality clean water.
"IWSP1 program takes place in the light of European initiative, aiming at improving potable water and water treatment services in four Delta governorates (Behaira, Damietta, Gharbia, and Sharqia)," the statement read.
There are multiple funding parties participating in upgrading existing infrastructure projects and establishing new ones in order to improve water and water treatment services for residents of the concerned governorates.
Notably, this program is a model for coordination between different European development parties, namely the European Union, French Development Agency (AFD), European Investment Bank (EIB), and KfW Development Bank, together with the Government of Egypt, with total funding of EUR 295 million.
