The Military Times, a US journal specializing in defense affairs, reported that the US National Guard is preparing for possible confrontations with Russia and China in the Arctic or a military clash between Moscow and Beijing on the one hand, and Washington and its allies on "NATO" on the one hand.

The newspaper wrote: “The National Guard is preparing for possible conflicts in the North Pole (Arctic Zone) with Russia and China. NATO allies such as Norway also operate in the Arctic, and the United States will be obliged to support them in the event of a confrontation.”

The newspaper pointed out that members of the National Guard conducted last January the "Northern Strike" military exercises, which took place in northern Michigan, to test skills in cold weather.

The main focus of the exercises was field artillery, and members of the 20th Special Forces Group worked alongside fire spotters and an engineering platoon that helped build temporary fire support positions and maintain roads.

The newspaper reported that Latvian Special Forces also took part in the exercises.
