The United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council draft resolution that called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid to the territory.

The vote, held under the presidency of Guyanese Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, saw 14 out of 15 Council members in favor of the resolution, which 10 non-permanent members introduced.

However, the US, a permanent member, exercised its veto power, effectively blocking its adoption.

The US Ambassador to the UN stated that the proposed resolution would have jeopardized ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a lasting ceasefire between the parties involved.

The blocked resolution had sought to halt hostilities in Gaza permanently and ensure unimpeded humanitarian assistance, amid intensifying global calls for civilian protection and aid access in the conflict zone.
