The US Senate voted on Wednesday to revoke the authorization to use force in Iraq by a vote of 66-30, more than 20 years after the US invaded the country, US news site Axios reported.

The historic bipartisan vote confirms Congress' authority over the use of military force abroad.

The legislation will now be referred to the House of Representatives, and it is unclear whether Republicans will adopt it.

The last time the Authorized Military Force ( AUMF) was revoked was in 1974.

However, US Congress approved in 2002 to use of military force on former President George W. Bush, the authority to invade Iraq and overthrow the rule of former President Saddam Hussein.

If the Senate prevents the repeal of the resolution, US presidents from launching attacks on Iraq without congressional approval.

The bill also repeals the 1991 Authorization for Use of Military Force that authorized the second Gulf War.
