The Biden administration is reportedly considering expanding the use of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba to house undocumented migrants, according to sources cited by NBC News.
The plan involves constructing a fenced tent camp within the naval base to accommodate incoming migrants.
Currently, Guantanamo’s detention center can hold up to 200 people, but the expansion would allow for a significantly larger capacity.
Legal experts within the administration are still assessing the potential legal challenges of detaining migrants at Guantanamo, as no formal legal justification has been provided for their transfer from the US mainland. The duration of their stay remains unclear.
According to sources, the facility could serve as a temporary holding center where migrants would either be deported to their home countries or sent to a third country willing to accept them.
Earlier, the Pentagon confirmed that a group of ten high-risk undocumented migrants had already been transferred to Guantanamo.
