The US State Department has announced its readiness to assist and welcome descendants of South African settlers, primarily from the Afrikaner minority, amid claims of land seizures and mistreatment by the South African government.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated on social media that the US is prepared to support South African settlers’ descendants facing property confiscation and alleged persecution.
She added that, under an executive order signed by former President Donald Trump, the US would suspend all non-essential financial aid to South Africa in response to its land expropriation policies.
Trump’s executive order, signed on Friday, halts financial assistance to South Africa due to its land expropriation policies and its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
The order criticizes South Africa’s Expropriation Act No. 13 of 2024, which allows the government to seize agricultural land from the Afrikaner minority without compensation.
The White House stated that the US would also implement a resettlement plan for South African farmers and their families, granting them refugee status in America.
Officials emphasized that the US would prioritize humanitarian relief efforts, including refugee acceptance programs tailored for Afrikaners facing displacement.
