On Wednesday, the US Department of Transportation lifted sanctions on Cuba flights, as part of measures announced by the Joe Biden administration last May.

The decision will allow US airlines to operate flights to Cuban airports other than Havana, according to a document.

On May 16, the administration announced that a set of sanctions against Cuba would soon be lifted, describing them as “practical steps that we’re taking to address the humanitarian situation” on the Island, and developing economic opportunities with the Cubans, according to senior US official at the time.

In addition to flights, the US government intends to implement a program that has been suspended for years, facilitating the procedures for obtaining entry visas and immigration for members of a family.

The administration promised to increase the capacity to process visa applications in Havana.

The United States is supposed to eliminate the limit on money transfers to Cuba, currently $1000 every 3 months for each sender and recipient, and will allow money to be sent outside the family framework.

Former President Donald Trump set this ceiling as part of measures against Cuba during his reign.

The Cuban government welcomed the decision on May 16, calling it a “one limited step in the right direction.”
