U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin commended the recent ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas, emphasizing that it must be implemented with "strict adherence."
In a statement, Austin highlighted the significance of the agreement, achieved after months of U.S.-led diplomacy in collaboration with Egypt and Qatar. He described it as "a new window of hope" for Israelis and Palestinians following months of bloodshed and suffering.
"This agreement offers a pathway to renewed hope and security for both sides. We remain committed to advancing towards a brighter, safer, and more just future for Israelis and Palestinians alike. No one should be condemned to live in perpetual conflict," Austin said.
Call for Peace and Coexistence
The U.S. Defense Secretary underscored the importance of leadership and wisdom in ending the conflict. "With sound leadership, we can draw closer to a day when Israelis and Palestinians live side by side in peace and security within two sovereign states," he added.
Austin also reiterated the United States' commitment to bringing home American citizens still detained in Gaza, pledging to ensure their safe return.
Qatar's Ceasefire Announcement
The announcement of the Gaza ceasefire, brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, came earlier this week. Months of delays were attributed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who reportedly introduced new conditions or reneged on prior agreements.
The Humanitarian Toll of War
According to Gaza's Ministry of Health, the Israeli war on Gaza has resulted in over 156,000 casualties, including thousands of children and women. More than 11,000 individuals remain missing amidst widespread destruction and famine, which has claimed the lives of hundreds of children and the elderly.
