A number of lawmakers in the US Congress have personally criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of undermining democracy in Israel in order to serve his personal interests.

The chairman of the Constitution Committee in the US Senate, Senator Dick Durbin, said during an interview with Haaretz, a daily Israeli newspaper, that, despite his support for Israel, he is deeply concerned about the plan to weaken the judiciary.

Durbin, who is considered the second-in-command of the Democratic Party in Congress, expressed his deep concern that Netanyahu placed his interests and those of his extremist political and judicial partners above the interests of democracy in Israel.

He added that US President Joe Biden did the right thing when he stressed the importance of balances and breaks, and strong democratic institutions in the context of the serious test that Israel is now facing.

As for Senator Tim Kaine, the former candidate for the position of US Vice President, he said that Netanyahu should listen to the hundreds of thousands of Israelis who demonstrated against the plan in the past days, and listen to the demonstrators and refrain from steps targeting democratic institutions in Israel.
