Data compiled by Bloomberg News Agency reveals that the United States has become the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the world for the first time, surpassing its main competitors, Qatar and Australia.

According to Bloomberg, the United States exported a record-breaking 91 million metric tons of LNG in the past year, marking a significant milestone in its LNG exports.

The increase in production and exports in the past year can be attributed to the restart of the Freeport LNG terminal in Texas, which had been shut down for several months following a fire incident in June 2022.

In contrast, Qatar, which had been the world's largest LNG exporter in 2022, saw its exports of LNG decline by 1% in the past year, marking its first decline in LNG exports since 2016.

Qatar now ranks third among LNG exporters, following Australia, which holds the second position.

Two new LNG projects are set to come online in the US this year, including Venture Global LNG's Calcasieu Pass project in Louisiana and the Golden Pass project in Texas, jointly owned by Exxon Mobil Corp and Qatar Petroleum.

Together, these projects will add nearly 38 million metric tons of LNG annually to the market when operating at full capacity.
