On the sidelines of her current official visit to Egypt, Ghada Waly, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), held meetings with several Egyptian ministers including Mahmoud Tawfiq Abdel Gawad, Minister of the Interior; Adnan Al-Fangri, , Minister of Justice; Badr Abdel Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Egyptian Affairs, and Maya Morsy, Minister of Social Solidarity.
According to a statement, the purpose of these meetings was to discuss cooperation between the UNODC and Egypt in areas related to the organization's work and the new government's vision.
During the meetings, Waly stressed the importance of a strong partnership and ongoing coordination between the UNODC and Egypt in implementing joint projects. She also congratulated the new ministers on their appointments.
The discussions emphasized the need to leverage and enhance Egypt's role in regional efforts by exchanging experiences, hosting capacity-building activities, and sharing the Egyptian experience.
UNODC provides support to the Egyptian government in combatting trafficking in persons and migrant smuggling, violence against women, corruption and money laundering, and cybercrime. In addition, UNODC supports criminal justice systems and relevant national institutions.
