Climate change is striking with all its force in the Arab region, threatening its most important natural resource, which is water, amid warnings issued by the United Nations (UN) of an increase in conflicts and instability in the region as a result of water scarcity.
In the words of Rola Abdullah Dashti, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), during a symposium organized by the Commission in cooperation with the League of Arab States on the sidelines of the United Nations Water Conference in New York, that in the water file, the region is "not on the right track." ".
Dashti added during the symposium titled "The joint commitment of the Arab region to accelerate the achievement of water security", in the presence of ministers, officials, and experts: that 50 million people in the Arab region lack drinking water, and 90 percent of the population lives in water-scarce countries.
Water in the Arab region is a source of prosperity, but it is also a potential cause of instability and conflict, as water scarcity is related to water and food security.
