The United Nations (UN) said that about 9.4 million people in South Sudan will need humanitarian assistance and protection services next year, an increase of half a million people compared to the current number.

Its 2023 South Sudan Humanitarian Needs Review says more people will experience insecurity next year.

About a third of the 12.4 million people living in southern Sudan face acute food insecurity.

The humanitarian situation has been exacerbated by violence, conflict, restrictions on humanitarian access, interference in humanitarian operations, public health challenges, and the impact of climate change such as floods and droughts, according to the report.

Aid will be most needed in conflict-affected counties in Upper Nile and Western Equatoria states.

"Something has to change in South Sudan because the number of people in need continues to rise every year and resources continue to decrease," Sarah Bisulu Nyanti, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for South Sudan, said in a statement.
