United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed on Monday his solidarity with the people of Myanmar and their democratic aspirations for an inclusive and democratic society, including the Rohingya.

Guterres remarks came as Myanmar nears the 1st anniversary of the military coup that saw the arrest of national icon Aung San Suu Kyi and her civilian government dissolved.

“The multiple vulnerabilities of all people across Myanmar and their regional implications require an urgent response. In the past year, violence has escalated, human rights and humanitarian crises have worsened, and poverty has increased rapidly in Myanmar," the UN secretary-general added in a statement.

In a related context, the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights said that the people of Myanmar - who have paid a heavy price in both lives and liberties - continue to relentlessly defend democracy in their country, a year after its political crisis.
