A new United Nations (UN) report confirms that the number of “school-aged” children affected by crises and needing educational support has risen from 75 million in 2016 to 222 million.
According to the United Nations Information Center, the United Nations Global Fund for Education in Emergencies and Protracted Crises explained that “education does not wait.” Of these 222 million girls and boys, up to 78.2 million are out of school, and nearly 120 million of them are enrolled in.”
In schools, the inflicted children do not achieve minimum proficiency in mathematics or reading, and in fact, only one in ten crisis-affected children enrolled in primary or secondary education actually achieves proficiency standards.
According to data from the United Nations Global Fund for Education (UNGFE), 84% of children who have dropped out of school live in areas of protracted crisis.
