António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), has warned of the dangers that the COVID-19 pandemic poses to peace everywhere ACROSS THE WORLD.
He indicated that the pandemic is the most serious threat to international peace and security, especially people caught in conflicts.
The warnings came during a speech by delivered the Secretary-General today, Friday, during the ceremony celebrating the International Day of Peace in the Japanese Garden at the United Nations headquarters.
Guterres affirmed that the main goal of the establishment of the United Nations 75 years ago was to prevent war and promote peace, and since then the organization has deepened knowledge of how to achieve this
noble mission.
In his speech before ringing the peace bell, the Secretary-General said: the COVID-19 pandemic poses risks to peace everywhere, sheds light on inequalities of all kinds, exploits them, and pits societies and countries against each other.
"The economic and social impact of the pandemic is falling disproportionately on the most vulnerable groups, which threatens social cohesion and further undermines confidence in government institutions," he said.
He emphasized the need to move together in unity and solidarity, within and between societies and countries, to strengthen common bonds and build peaceful and resilient societies.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations also made it clear that he will repeat the call he made last March regarding a global ceasefire during the General Assembly meetings, calling to address the weaknesses and inequalities that work against peace and to push for peace.
However, Guterres, considered that the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is getting out of control.
He said, in a press conference, held on Thursday that the (COVID-19) pandemic is a crisis that does not resemble any others in our lives.
He added that mankind is approaching to cross the one million deaths due to the virus.
This pandemic is the first threat to global security nowadays.
Regarding anti-virus vaccines, Guterres continued to say that many people think that they can rely on the vaccine, but no vaccine will stop the spread of the pandemic.
He stressed that vaccine must be viewed as a global public good, but the virus knows no boundaries.
The world population needs a vaccine that is affordable and available to everyone.
Secretary-General of the United Nations called on the international community to expand the use of available and new tools that can help fight the disease and provide life-saving treatment, especially during the next 12 months.
According to official statistics, the number of people infected with the Coronavirus has reached 29 million and 900 thousand cases, while the number of deaths reached 941 thousand cases so far.
