The United Nations Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wiensland, arrived in the Gaza Strip, Thursday morning, accompanied by a UN delegation, through the Beit Hanoun checkpoint.

It is expected that the UN envoy will meet with the Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip, to discuss developments in the Palestinian arena, to prevent the field situation from slipping into more tension, and to try to defuse the escalation in light of the deterioration of the field situation.

Winsland's visit to the Gaza Strip comes in an attempt to calm the situation and maintain calm, after Israeli occupation forces stormed Nablus yesterday, which resulted in the death of 11 Palestinians, and the injury of more than 100 others, including serious and critical injuries.

Wensland expressed, in a statement, yesterday, Wednesday, his deep disturbance at the continuing cycle of violence in the West Bank, denouncing the large loss of civilian lives as a result of the Israeli military operation in Nablus.

He said he continues to engage with all concerned to de-escalate the situation, urging all parties to refrain from taking steps that would inflame an already volatile situation.

Today, Thursday morning, the Israeli occupation warplanes bombed sites belonging to the Palestinian factions, in Gaza City, claiming to respond to the firing of missiles at dawn towards the settlements areas around the Gaza Strip.
