The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has expressed deep and grave concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Mali.

This comes as tensions and clashes escalate in parts of the northern and eastern regions of the country, while the United Nations peacekeeping mission completes its withdrawal from the country by the end of this year.

UN spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said in a statement today, "Nine million people are in need of humanitarian assistance throughout Mali, noting that humanitarian agencies have only been able to reach 1.2 million people this year."

The security official added that relief agencies need secure and unimpeded access to affected communities in order to continue their activities and expand the scope of humanitarian response.

The situation in Mali has been marked by ongoing conflict and instability, which has had severe consequences for the civilian population. The increasing tensions and violence have resulted in a significant number of internally displaced persons and refugees, as well as widespread food insecurity and limited access to basic services.

The United Nations and its humanitarian partners have been working to provide assistance and support to the affected population in Mali. However, the escalating situation and the challenges in accessing vulnerable communities have hindered the delivery of much-needed aid.

The UN has called for urgent action to address the humanitarian crisis in Mali and ensure the protection of civilians. It has appealed to all parties involved in the conflict to respect international humanitarian law and facilitate the provision of aid to those in need.

Efforts are also underway to mobilize additional resources to scale up the humanitarian response in Mali. The international community is being urged to increase funding for humanitarian operations and support initiatives that promote stability and peace in the country.

As the United Nations continues to closely monitor the situation in Mali, it remains committed to working with national authorities and humanitarian partners to alleviate the suffering of the affected population and promote long-term stability and development in the country.
