The UN special adviser on Libya, Stephanie Williams commended the members of the Joint House of Representatives (HoR) and High State Council (HSC) Committee for continuing to work toward a consensual constitutional framework to take Libya to national inclusive elections as soon as possible.
In a tweet, the UN Advisor urged them to fulfill their duty to the Libyan people, who have demonstrated a desire for an election by registering to vote by the millions.
She also expressed confidence that the efforts of the joint committee would put Libya on the path to stability, security, and development.
The importance of this third round stems from discussing 30 percent of the controversial points in the constitutional rule that paves the way for holding the elections, after the failed attempt to hold them on December 24.
The U.N.-brokered negotiations are being held amid concerted international pressure on the two chambers to put their disputes aside and agree on the election’s legal basis.
The United Nations Mission in Libya put forward its initiative to resolve the crisis and debate on the constitutional basis to contain the crisis, after the outgoing Prime Minister of the National Unity Government, Abdul Hamid al-Dbeibeh, refused to hand over power to the Fathi Bashagha government appointed by parliament in early March.
