On Monday, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has called for global action to combat corruption.
This came during the 9th session of the Conference of States Parties (CoSP) to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).
In his word- via video conference- he added that this conference is an important opportunity to take serious global steps to prevent and combat corruption, saying: "Let us restore trust in international institutions."
Moreover, he added that corruption has become a challenge that is invading some societies, especially in light of the Coronavirus pandemic.
In addition, UN Chief called for expanding efforts to protect countries' resources from corruption, which he considered an important step towards achieving sustainable development in socities.
It is worth mentioning that, the 9th session of the Conference of States Parties (CoSP) to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), scheduled to be held from December 13 to 17, 2021.
The session will enhance efforts to promote sustainable development, recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure economic and political stability, and set the international anti-corruption agenda in next years.
The conference, which is held every two years, is one of the world’s largest anti-corruption gatherings and brings together people from the Member States, parliaments, inter-governmental organizations, civil society, and the private sector.
The conference will review the implementation of the UNCAC, the only legally binding universal anti-corruption instrument and discuss preventing corruption and improving international cooperation to better tackle corruption and asset recovery.
