The head of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Mission in Ukraine, Matilda Bogner, has called on Kyiv and Moscow to investigate the incidents of torture of prisoners of war (POWs) in Ukraine in the background of videos documenting the abuse of prisoners by the warring parties in the conflict.
“We are checking all the material that has been taken out. But based on what we have seen, this is a major concern. We have seen videos from both sides, with the Ukrainian prisoners who were captured by the Russian side and the Russian prisoners who were captured by the Ukrainians,” Bogner said.
“We remind all parties to the crisis of their obligations under international law and human rights towards the humane treatment of prisoners, the inadmissibility of making them the subject of public review, and the need to respect their dignity,” she added.
