About 5000 civilians have been killed in Ukraine’s Mariupol city as a result of the Russian attack that began more than 40 days ago, according to a report issued by the United Nations (UN).
On his part, Vadym Boichenko, Mariupol’s Mayor, said the situation was and remains a “humanitarian catastrophe”, pointing out that the civilians who managed to escape called the situation in Mariupol “hell.”
“We have evacuated about 100,000 people to the controlled part of Ukraine. Somewhere around 70,000 people in our coastal village are waiting for evacuation, including in the city of Berdyansk. We are currently working on it,” the mayor confirmed.
The mayor called on the international community to help get the civilians out of Mariupol, at least the elderly, women, and children.
It is worth mentioning that Mariupol, one of the ten largest cities in Ukraine, is located in the Donetsk region on the shores of the Sea of Azov, with a population of about 450,000 people.
