The United Arab Emirates ( UAE) announced the completion of the construction of the first power plant run by waste. According to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, the station is supposed to enter the testing and operational phase soon.
The agency stated that the station, after its operation, will help the Emirate of Sharjah to be the first city in the Middle East region free of waste while achieving a high value of non-recyclable waste.
The new plant raises the rate of waste persion away from collection places from 76% to 100%, and will also help in reducing the quantities of waste destined for landfills to support the state's directions to enhance the clean energy mix.
The Emirati news agency added that "when the plant reaches its maximum operational capacity, it will contribute to converting up to 300,000 tons of non-recyclable waste annually from landfills, in order to produce 30 megawatts of low-carbon energy to meet the electricity needs of 28 thousand homes in the Emirate of Sharjah."
