Tunisia put into circulation a new banknote of ten dinars, holding a picture of a woman for the first time.
Abdulaziz bin Saeed, director general of the Treasury of the Tunisian Central Bank said that the new banknote will have the face of the country's first female doctor, Tawhida Bin El-Sheikh, with the aim of honoring women in the scientific and medical fields.
He added that the decision was made to continuing to choose a contemporary figure, as well as honoring women in the scientific and health fields.
Born in 1909, Dr. Tawhida Yatima was the first woman in Tunisia and North Africa to practice medicine.
After studying medicine in France, she returned to Tunisia in 1936 and opened her own clinic at a time when men dominated the profession.
Abdel-Sattar Amamou, a researcher in contemporary Tunisian history, said: “Tawhida Ibn El-Sheikh returned to Tunisia in the beginning of the thirties, at the age of 36, and she was the first Tunisian and Arab physician to stand up and practice this profession and then open her clinic to the rich, the poor, both men and women, nationals and foreigners."
She was known for her great heart and then continued her career until the last moment of her life, in the love of her profession and the love of her country.
Tawhida contributed to the country's cultural life by creating the first Tunisian women's magazine in the French language, "Leila" magazine between 1936 to 1941 and other activities.
"She continued her entire life in love, sharing and giving more to medicine and Tunisia, and I believe that the Tunisian authorities pay tribute to this great lady, the first doctor in the Arab world, who decided to put into circulation a banknote of ten dinars bearing the face of Dr. Tawhidah bin Sheikh," Amamou added.
The issuance of this banknote comes as the whole country is trying to support the efforts of medical workers who face great challenges at the present time in the context of their resistance to the emerging Corona virus.
